Students should explain the need for a balanced diet in simple words and identify why eating only one type of food is not healthy.
Students should identify examples of deficiency diseases and connect them with lack of particular nutrients where age-appropriate.

Materials needed
Blackboard or smart board, chalk or marker, food picture cards, textbook, notebook, sticky notes or slips, and a simple worksheet.
Optional materials: empty food packets with nutrition labels, pictures of meals, pulses or grains in small packets, paper plates, chart paper, crayons, and a balanced diet poster.
If students bring lunch boxes, use them sensitively. Do not compare wealth, brand, caste, religion, body shape, or family food choices. Keep the focus on nutrients and variety.
Prior knowledge check
Ask: Why do we eat food? What did you eat yesterday? Which foods give quick energy? Which foods help us grow? Which foods do parents usually ask us to eat for good health?
Write student responses on the board without correcting immediately. Group their answers later into energy-giving foods, body-building foods, and protective foods.
This helps students see that they already know many examples before learning the scientific terms.
5-minute warm-up activity
Write three meals on the board: Meal A: rice, dal, vegetables, curd. Meal B: chips, cold drink, sweets. Meal C: chapati, egg or paneer, salad, fruit. Ask students which meal is healthier and why.
Let students answer in everyday language first: gives energy, has vegetables, has protein, too much junk food, not enough variety.
Then introduce the lesson question: What are the components of food that make a meal healthy?
Teacher explanation
Explain that food is made of different components called nutrients. Nutrients perform different jobs in the body.
Carbohydrates mainly give energy. Proteins help growth and repair. Fats give stored energy and warmth, but too much fat is unhealthy. Vitamins and minerals protect the body and support body functions. Roughage helps digestion. Water helps transport, digestion, cooling, and waste removal.
Use simple examples from local food: rice, wheat, maize, potato, dal, chickpea, milk, curd, egg, fish, nuts, oil, ghee, green vegetables, fruits, and water.
Board plan
Write the heading: Components of Food. Under it, make a three-column table: Nutrient, Main function, Food examples.
Suggested board entries: carbohydrates - energy - rice, wheat, potato; proteins - growth and repair - dal, beans, eggs, milk; fats - stored energy - oil, ghee, nuts; vitamins and minerals - protection and body functions - fruits, vegetables, milk; roughage - helps digestion - salad, fruits, whole grains; water - body processes - drinking water, fruits, soups.
At the bottom of the board, write the key line: A balanced diet contains all nutrients in the right amount according to age, activity, health, and need.
Main activity: food sorting
Divide the class into small groups. Give each group food names or picture cards: rice, chapati, dal, milk, egg, apple, spinach, butter, peanuts, potato, carrot, fish, curd, beans, oil, banana, and water.
Ask groups to sort the cards into energy-giving foods, body-building foods, protective foods, and other important components such as water and roughage.
After sorting, each group explains two choices. Correct gently where needed. Some foods contain more than one nutrient, so accept reasonable answers if students can explain their thinking.
Activity variation: my balanced plate
Give students a paper plate outline or ask them to draw a plate in their notebook. They must design one balanced meal using foods available at home or in the local area.
The plate should include energy-giving food, protein-rich food, vegetables or fruit, water, and a small amount of fat if needed.

Food label mini task
If you have empty food packets, show students the nutrition label. Point out energy, protein, fat, sugar, salt, vitamins, or minerals depending on the label.
Ask students: Is this food useful every day or sometimes? Which nutrient is high? Which nutrient is missing? Does the packet tell the whole story about health?
This activity makes the lesson practical and builds early food literacy without turning the class into a nutrition lecture.
Balanced diet explanation
Explain that a balanced diet does not mean the same meal for everyone. A growing child, a sportsperson, a sick person, and an adult may need different amounts of food.
A balanced diet includes variety and moderation. It should have enough energy food, body-building food, protective food, roughage, and water.
Use the simple classroom message: Do not depend on only one favourite food. Your body needs a team of nutrients.
Deficiency diseases
Explain that deficiency means lack of something important. If a nutrient is missing for a long time, the body may develop health problems.
Use simple examples: lack of vitamin C can lead to scurvy, lack of vitamin D can affect bones, lack of iron can cause anaemia, and lack of iodine can affect the thyroid gland. Keep details age-appropriate.
Ask students to remember the idea, not just the names: different nutrients protect different body functions.
Misconceptions to address
Misconception: Expensive food is always healthier. Correction: Many local foods such as dal, seasonal vegetables, fruits, curd, eggs, millets, and whole grains can be nutritious.
Misconception: Fats are always bad. Correction: The body needs some fat, but too much fried and oily food is not healthy.
Misconception: Only thin children are unhealthy or only heavy children eat badly. Correction: Health cannot be judged by teasing or appearance. Focus on habits, variety, activity, and medical advice when needed.
Misconception: One superfood can solve everything. Correction: A balanced diet needs variety.
Assessment during class
Ask quick oral questions: Which nutrient mainly gives energy? Which nutrient helps growth and repair? Why do we need roughage? Why is water important? What is a balanced diet?
Use thumbs up, thumbs sideways, thumbs down after each concept to check confidence.
During group work, observe whether students can sort foods with reasons, not just guesses.

For extended work, ask students to interview a parent or grandparent about one traditional healthy food and write why it is useful.
Differentiation
For students who need support, provide food pictures and a word bank: energy, growth, protection, digestion, water.
For confident students, ask them to compare two meals and explain which is more balanced with reasons.
For multilingual classrooms, allow students to name foods in the local language first, then write the English science term beside it.
Inclusive classroom note
Food is personal and cultural. Avoid making students feel ashamed of home food, lunch box, body size, religion, vegetarian or non-vegetarian choices, or economic background.
Use examples from different food habits and regions. Explain that many diets can be balanced if they include variety and essential nutrients.
