How to Write Better Answers
A complete answer-writing guide for school exams covering command words, marks-based structure, subject-wise formats, keywords, diagrams, numericals, time management, presentation, and checking.
Better answers are targeted answers
A better answer is not always a longer answer. It is an answer that matches the question, uses the right keywords, gives the required depth, and is easy for the examiner to mark.
Many students know the chapter but lose marks because they write too generally, ignore the command word, skip steps, forget units, leave diagrams unlabelled, or do not answer all sub-parts.
Your goal is simple: make your knowledge visible on paper in the exact form the question needs.
Decode the command word
Before writing, underline the command word: define, state, list, identify, describe, explain, compare, differentiate, justify, evaluate, analyse, prove, solve, calculate, draw, label, or give reasons.
The command word decides the answer style. Define needs precision. List needs points. Explain needs reason and detail. Compare needs two sides. Justify needs evidence. Evaluate needs judgement. Solve needs steps.
A common mistake is writing a long explanation when the question asks to state, or writing only a definition when the question asks to explain.
Read the full question
Read every word, especially not, any two, with example, in brief, justify, diagram, reason, and according to the passage.
Check whether the question has sub-parts. Many students answer the first part well and forget the second part.
If a question gives a case, graph, map, poem extract, data table, or source, use that material in your answer. Do not write only memorised textbook lines.
Write by marks
Marks tell you the expected depth. A one-mark answer should be direct. A two-mark answer usually needs two points or one point with explanation. A three-mark answer often needs three clear points, one labelled diagram with explanation, or a short structured paragraph depending on the subject.
A five-mark answer needs structure: short opening line, organised points, examples or evidence, and a clear ending where needed.
Do not write everything you know. Write what earns marks. Extra unrelated content wastes time and can hide the correct answer.
Use the P-E-E structure
For many theory answers, use P-E-E: Point, Explanation, Example or Evidence.
Point: state the main idea. Explanation: show why or how it works. Example or Evidence: add a fact, quote, data, diagram, event, law, formula, or textbook example.
This structure is useful in English, Social Science, Science theory, value-based answers, and long answers where the examiner needs to see your reasoning.
Use keywords without stuffing
Every subject has scoring words. In Science, use terms like photosynthesis, neutralisation, refraction, heredity, resistance, catalyst, displacement, or ecosystem correctly. In Social Science, use terms like federalism, sovereignty, resources, democracy, globalisation, nationalism, consumer rights, or sustainable development where relevant.
In Maths, keywords are steps, formula, theorem names, units, and final statement. In English, keywords are theme, tone, character, evidence, context, and the exact demand of the question.
Do not force keywords randomly. A keyword earns marks only when it is used in the correct context.
Subject-wise answer style
Maths: write formula, substitution, steps, calculation, answer, and unit where needed. Do not jump from question to final answer if steps carry marks.
Science: use correct terms, diagrams, equations, definitions, examples, observations, and labelled steps. For experiments, include aim, observation, inference, and precautions if asked.
Social Science: write point-wise answers with causes, effects, examples, dates, maps, comparisons, keywords, and conclusion where useful.
English and languages: answer the question directly, support literature answers with text evidence, follow formats for letters or analytical paragraphs, and keep grammar clear.
Computer: write syntax, steps, definitions, output, logic, and examples. If code is asked, keep indentation and symbols readable.
Diagrams, maps, tables, and flowcharts
Use diagrams when the question asks for them or when they make the answer clearer. A labelled diagram can save words and improve marks.
Diagrams should be large enough, labelled neatly, drawn with pencil if required by your school, and placed close to the relevant answer.
Tables are useful for compare and differentiate questions. Flowcharts are useful for processes, cycles, classifications, and step-based answers.
Numericals and problem-solving answers
For numericals, write the given values, formula, substitution, calculation, final answer, and unit. If there is a conversion, show it clearly.
In Maths proofs or construction, write reasoned steps. In Science numericals, do not forget units and signs.
If you make a mistake, draw one neat line through the wrong part and continue. Do not make the page messy with repeated overwriting.
Long answers without confusion
For long answers, spend a few seconds planning. Write small keywords in the margin or mentally order your points before starting.
Use short paragraphs or numbered points. Begin with a direct opening line. Then give organised points. End with a closing line only if the answer needs conclusion.
Avoid one giant paragraph. Even good content becomes harder to mark when it is not separated.
Presentation that helps marks
Good presentation is not decoration. It is clarity. Number answers correctly, leave margins, keep spacing, underline only important terms if allowed, and separate points.
Write legibly at exam speed. The examiner should not have to search for your answer.
Keep diagrams, equations, headings, and sub-parts visually clear. A clean answer sheet makes checking easier and reduces accidental mark loss.
Time management while writing
Before starting, scan the paper and notice marks distribution. Do not spend ten minutes perfecting a one-mark answer.
A simple rule is to give more time to high-mark questions but not so much that short questions are rushed at the end.
If stuck, mark the question and move on. Return later. One difficult question should not damage the whole paper.
Use marking schemes for practice
Marking schemes show what kind of points earn marks. Study them after attempting a sample paper, not before, so you can compare your answer honestly.
Look for patterns: how many points are expected, whether examples are needed, how steps are marked, what alternate answers are accepted, and how language answers are assessed.
CBSE publishes sample question papers and marking schemes for board classes. Even if you are not in a board class, the habit of checking answers against criteria is useful.
Make an answer-improvement notebook
Create a small notebook with three columns: question, what I wrote, better answer pattern.
Use it for repeated mistakes: too vague, missing keyword, no example, wrong command word, skipped unit, weak opening, no diagram, too long, or incomplete sub-part.
Before exams, revise this notebook. It is often more useful than rereading the whole chapter because it targets the way you lose marks.
Final checking routine
Keep the last few minutes for checking. Look for question numbers, skipped sub-parts, units, signs, diagrams, labels, map entries, spellings of key terms, and page sequence.
Check whether every answer actually responds to the command word. If a question asked why, make sure you gave a reason. If it asked compare, make sure both sides are visible.
Many marks are lost in small places. Final checking is not optional; it is part of answer writing.
