How to Make a Study Timetable

A complete student timetable system for school days, homework, revision, weak subjects, exam prep, breaks, sleep, screens, weekends, and weekly review.

What a good timetable actually does

A study timetable is not a decoration for the wall. It is a decision system that tells you what to study, when to stop, what to revise, and how to recover when a day goes wrong.

The best timetable balances four things: today's school work, old revision, weak-subject repair, and rest. If any one of these is missing, the plan becomes stressful or incomplete.

Do not copy someone else's timetable blindly. A student with long travel, tuition, sports, younger siblings, or late school hours needs a different plan from a student with free evenings.

Step 1: Put fixed time first

Start by writing the time that is already fixed: school, travel, meals, tuition, coaching, sleep, sports, prayer, family duties, and rest.

Only after this should you add study blocks. Many timetables fail because they ignore travel, tiredness, dinner, bath time, family time, or the need to simply breathe after school.

Keep sleep as a fixed block, not leftover time. CDC sleep guidance lists 9 to 12 hours for children aged 6 to 12 and 8 to 10 hours for teens aged 13 to 17.

Step 2: Divide study into four blocks

Use four types of study blocks: homework, revision, practice, and weak-subject repair.

Homework keeps school work complete. Revision keeps old chapters alive. Practice builds exam speed. Weak-subject repair gives extra attention to topics that are confusing, slow, or repeatedly wrong.

A balanced school-day plan may look like this: 45 minutes homework, 30 minutes revision, 25 minutes practice questions, and 20 minutes weak-subject repair. Adjust the length by class, exam pressure, and energy.

Step 3: Use energy, not only clock time

Put the hardest subject in your best-energy time. For many students this is early evening after food and rest, or early morning before school.

Use low-energy time for lighter work such as organising notes, revising definitions, labelling diagrams, reading literature, or correcting notebooks.

Avoid placing the most difficult subject at the end of the night. Late-night study often feels heroic, but it can reduce sleep and make the next day weaker.

Step 4: Rotate subjects intelligently

Do not study only the subject you like. Rotate difficult, medium, and lighter subjects so the timetable does not become boring or exhausting.

A useful weekly rotation is: Maths or numericals four to five times, Science or concept-heavy subjects three to four times, languages two to three times, Social Science two to three times, and weak topics daily in short blocks.

If a test is coming, increase that subject temporarily, but do not completely abandon the others. One subject should not eat the whole week unless the exam is immediate.

Step 5: Add spaced revision

Spaced practice means revising material across days instead of cramming it all at once. This is one of the most useful ideas for timetable design.

Use a simple 1-3-7 method: revise a topic once on the same day, again after three days, and again after a week. For weak chapters, add one more practice session before the test.

The Learning Scientists describe spaced practice as spreading study over time instead of doing one long session close to the exam. Your timetable should therefore contain small revision blocks even when no exam is near.

Step 6: Use active recall slots

Do not fill every revision slot with rereading. Active recall means closing the book and trying to bring the answer back from memory.

Use 10 to 15 minute recall slots for formulas, vocabulary, dates, maps, definitions, diagrams, grammar rules, equations, theorems, and mistakes from old tests.

A recall slot can be simple: write five formulas, explain one concept aloud, redraw a diagram, solve two old mistakes, or answer three short questions without looking.

Step 7: Plan breaks and screens

Short breaks make the timetable sustainable. After 35 to 50 minutes of focused study, take 5 to 10 minutes to stretch, drink water, or walk.

Keep phone and entertainment screens away during homework and before bed. The American Academy of Pediatrics' family media guidance recommends screen-free zones such as during homework and before bed.

If you need a device for study, use one screen at a time, close unrelated tabs, turn off notifications, and decide the exact task before opening the device.

Sample school-day timetable

Example for a student who returns home around 3:30 pm: rest and snack 3:30 to 4:15, homework 4:15 to 5:00, break or play 5:00 to 5:45, revision 6:00 to 6:40, weak subject 6:45 to 7:15, dinner and family time 7:30 to 8:15, light recall or reading 8:30 to 8:50, bag check and sleep routine after that.

This is only a model. A Class 5 student may need shorter blocks. A Class 10 student may need longer practice sessions. A student with tuition should reduce home-study blocks but keep at least one short recall slot.

The key is not the exact timing. The key is having homework, revision, weak-subject work, rest, and sleep in the same plan.

Weekend timetable

Weekends should not become either full cramming or full escape. Use them to repair the week.

A good weekend plan includes one longer weak-subject block, one written practice block, one upcoming-test block, one notebook or worksheet completion block, and one proper rest or hobby block.

Use Sunday evening for a 20-minute review: what was completed, what is pending, which subject is weak, what tests are coming, and what the first task on Monday will be.

Exam-time timetable

During exams, shift the timetable from learning to revision and practice. Keep three blocks: concept revision, written practice, and mistake correction.

Do not revise only favourite chapters. Mark chapters as strong, medium, or weak. Strong chapters need quick recall, medium chapters need written practice, and weak chapters need concept repair.

On the day before an exam, revise summaries, formulas, definitions, diagrams, maps, grammar rules, marked mistakes, and sample answers. Avoid staying up late to start large new chapters.

For weak subjects

Weak subjects need small daily contact. A 20-minute daily repair block is better than ignoring the subject for six days and then suffering for three hours.

Use the repair block for one exact problem: one type of fraction sum, one physics formula, one grammar rule, one map location set, one poem explanation, or one diagram.

End each repair block with a tiny test. If you cannot solve or explain without help, the topic needs another slot later in the week.

Common timetable mistakes

Do not make a timetable with no breaks. It may look serious, but it usually fails within days.

Do not write vague tasks like study Science. Write revise chemical reactions definitions, solve exercise 3.2 questions 1 to 5, or practise two unseen passages.

Do not punish yourself after one missed day. Restart with the next small task. A timetable is useful only if it allows recovery.

Do not let tuition replace self-study. Tuition may explain, but self-study is where recall, writing, and mistakes become visible.
