Notes on polynomial degree, terms, coefficients, zeroes, and factorization basics.
mediumRevision notes
Key points
- A polynomial is an expression with variables and non-negative integer powers.
- The degree is the highest power of the variable.
- A zero of a polynomial makes its value equal to zero.
Degree and type
A linear polynomial has degree 1, a quadratic polynomial has degree 2, and a cubic polynomial has degree 3.
Students should identify the highest power after arranging terms properly.
Zero of a polynomial
To check whether a number is a zero, substitute it into the polynomial.
If the result is zero, the number is a zero of the polynomial.
Quick practice
- Find the degree of 2x^4 - 3x + 1.
- Check whether x = 1 is a zero of x - 1.
- Write one quadratic polynomial.
