- A variable is a symbol that can take different values.

- Only like terms can be added or subtracted directly.
Parts of an expression
In 3x + 5, x is the variable, 3 is the coefficient of x, and 5 is a constant.
Understanding parts of expressions helps students simplify and solve later algebra topics.
Like and unlike terms
Terms with the same variable part are like terms, such as 2x and 7x.
Terms such as 3x and 3y are unlike terms because the variable parts are different.
