Understanding fractions
In 3/4, the number 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator. The denominator tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Fractions become easier when students draw shapes, divide them into equal parts, and shade the required parts.
Common mistakes
Students often compare only numerators. For like fractions this works, but for unlike fractions they should first understand the size of each part.
When adding like fractions, the denominator remains the same.
