Definitions

Electric current: Rate of flow of electric charge through a conductor.

Potential difference: Work done per unit charge in moving charge between two points.

Resistance: Opposition offered by a conductor to the flow of current.

One kilowatt hour: Electrical energy consumed by a 1 kW device used for 1 hour.

Formulas

  • I = Q / t
  • V = W / Q
  • V = IR
  • R = rho l / A
  • P = VI = I^2R = V^2/R
  • Electrical energy = Power x Time

Examples

  1. If V = 12 V and R = 4 ohm, current I = V/R = 3 A.
  2. Two 2 ohm resistors in series give 4 ohm total resistance.

Current, voltage, and resistance

Current is measured in ampere and potential difference in volt.

Resistance depends on length, area, material, and temperature.

Circuits and power

In series, resistance adds directly. In parallel, equivalent resistance decreases.

Power rating helps calculate energy consumed by electrical appliances.

Common mistakes

  • Using series formula for a parallel circuit.
  • Forgetting to convert watts to kilowatts while calculating electricity units.
  • Writing only the final answer in numericals without formula and substitution.
