Passage strategy
Skim the passage to identify topic, purpose, audience, and broad structure. Then read the questions and mark the exact lines that can support each answer.
For factual questions, answer directly. For inference questions, combine a clue from the passage with a short explanation.
Common question types
Main idea questions ask what the whole passage is mainly about. Detail questions ask what the passage states. Tone questions ask the writer's attitude, such as concerned, hopeful, critical, or informative.
Vocabulary-in-context questions should be answered by replacing the word in the sentence and checking whether the meaning still fits.

- Read an editorial paragraph and write the central idea in one sentence.
