Key points

  • Poetry answers should connect image, emotion, and theme.
  • A device is useful only when its effect is explained.
  • Speaker and poet are not always the same voice.

Poetry reading method

Read the poem once for situation and emotion. Read again to mark images, contrasts, repeated words, and shifts in tone.

Ask what the speaker observes, what the speaker feels, and what larger idea the poem leaves with the reader.

Literary devices

Common devices include simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, imagery, repetition, contrast, and symbolism.

In answers, write the device, identify the example briefly without quoting long text, and explain the effect on meaning.

Quick practice

  1. List three images from a poem and the feeling each creates.
  2. Explain one metaphor in your own words.
  3. Write a 40-word answer on the theme of a poem.
